Against Common Sense: managing amid the paradoxes of everyday organisational life

The following is the text of a talk given by Chris Mowles at the University of Hertfordshire on Friday Feb 13th as part of the MBA Masterclass series.

“There is huge importance in our being able to realise the uniqueness of the particular circumstances we find ourselves facing and in not assuming that they are covered by our existing ways of knowing. Our abstractions and simplifications are not enough. We have to be able to renew what we know in the face of new particular circumstances that we constantly encounter.”

To work with people is not “soft”

Why do we call the skills to work with people “soft skills”? I agree with management consultant Brian Evje who says that “leadership is difficult because relating to people is challenging”. Working with people sometimes takes every skill, experience and talent that I have – and a lot of courage! It’s not soft skills. It’s also not flum! To lead people is very real and if we want to be masterful – it’s hard core work. But that does not mean to BE hard, to work with people takes the courage to be authentic, passionate, soft, heartful, strong and sometimes very vulnerable. The good news it’s that to work with people is also exciting, rewarding and fun. Actually, in my taste, the most exciting part of life that you can learn to master!

It’s time to get excited with conflict!

So totally uplifting to read professor Ralph Stacey’s blog on the paradox between conflict and harmony! And yet challenging. Yes, I share his view that our strive for and over-emphasis on harmony is leading us into sticky group interactions where real differencies in opionion or experience have no chance to come up and lead to new beginnings and true innovation! But since conflict is SO challenging to most of us, we need to work on our own relationship to conflict to become less challenged and more apt to lead through conflicts. Avoidance of conflict is not the solution. If you are inspired to go deeper in this topic – welcome to join our workshops on “Process leading and conflicts”. Take a look at our website to find out more.
